D'Nyala Game Lodge, Introduction
Resort type: Self-catering (14 Rooms/Units)
Location: D'Nyala Nature Reserve (Lephalale)
Imagine waking up to the sound of the unprecedented sounds of an orchestra of wilderness, with a rich variety of animals, tall trees and woodland habitats that form umbrellas stretching further than your eyes can see. Imagine waking up in a bush within reach of town.
Situated 10 km from the town of Lephalale en route to Botswana, this distinctively striking and tranquil resort gets its name from the massive Nyala tree that is characteristic of the area, and is also the southernmost habitat of the famous baobab tree. D'nyala boasts a diversity of game which includes some 65 mammal species such as the white rhinoceros, giraffe, waterbuck, tsessebe, gemsbok and more.
Animals at D'nyala freely roam around the area including where the chalets are situated, making game viewing a door step away. It also hosts a handful of small cats, the brown hyena, black-backed jackal and the leopard. Several bird species, to the tune of 263 have been identified here including the waterfowl attracted to the area by the plains which also o¬ffer excellent game viewing opportunities.
In the centre of it all, D'nyala has a spectacular VIP mansion, and a conference centre that is of historical significance. It was here that the peace talks between Noble Peace Prize winner FW de Klerk and Cyril Ramaphosa were held before the democratic transformation in South Africa.
D'Nyala Nature Reserve
Located 15 km to the south-east of Lephalale, this reserve offers a good combination of game reserve, conference centre and a well equipped camp. The game reserve is home to the nyala antelope, as well as 60 other mammal species including white rhino, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, tsessebe, eland and others.
It also includes a variety of predators such as leopard, brown hyena jackal and smaller cats. Some impressive Nyala Berry and Baobab trees can be encountered here.
Most importantly the reserve boasts two game viewing hides overlooking the flat savannah plains and riverbeds where it is quite easy to spot animals, expecially during the drier winter months.
The conference centre is of historical significance, because it was here that the peace talks between Nobel Peace Prize winner FW de Klerk and Cyril Ramaphosa were held before the democratic transformation in South Africa.
